The municipality of Örnsköldsvik is located on the east coast of Sweden, at about 600 km north of Stockholm, the capital. The municipality is part of the county of Västernorrland.
It covers an area of 680 square kilometres, with 55 000 inhabitants, of which around 35 000 live in the central region. This area, including the town of Önsköldsvik, is currently enjoying a period of rapid expansion especially within the industry and commerce but not only in this domains.
Historically, the countryside shows traces of human activity way back 7000-8000 years ago. Ancient remains can still be seen today, there are plenty of mounds from the bronze age in the country side. The oldest known farm in the north of Sweden goes back approx 2000 years.
The Municipality of Örnsköldsvik was founded in 1842 and the town in 1894. The name was given in memory of Per Abraham Örnsköld who was the county governor between 1762-1769 and who started to build up the trading on the coast.
